Aliv Kheer or Alivachi kheer is a famous Maharashtrian delicacy. Basically Aliv kheer recipe is made from aliv seeds, milk and jaggery. Aliv seeds or halim seeds benefits are enormous. Most importantly, aliv seeds are superfood nowadays, because it is loaded with iron, calcium, folate, vitamins A, C , E and protein.

Another name for aliv seeds

It is called by many names in different languages as,  Aliv or alivachi in Maharashtra, Aalvi in Kannada, Garden cress seeds in English and Halim seeds in Hindi.

Furthermore, aliv seeds have a particular smell of its own. So to minimize that smell, soak it in coconut water / milk / regular water before making anything from aliv seeds.

Apart from these, aliv is a most nutritious food, especially for women. It provides incredible health benefits  In fact these halim seeds are boon for women’s health.  Also it is extremely good for hair loss and and considered to be a remedy to treat digestive issues.

Even more this healthy kheer is a sugar free kheer recipe, as no sugar, no jaggery is added here. In other words, it is a diabetic friendly kheer, made with natural sweetener dates paste. Certainly it adds up more nutrition, as dates also have high nutrition profile.

Special Precautions Or Side Effects Of Halim Seeds

  • Garden cress contains Diuretic properties. So patients with frequent urination should be careful while consuming these seeds
  • Garden cress is abortifacient in nature. Thus pregnant women should not eat halim seeds, As they might stimulate uterine contractions and abortion. Thus certain people use it to induce labor in the late stages of pregnancy
  • Garden cress contains goitrogens, which subdue the proper functioning of thyroid gland. If consume halim in large quantities can cause enlargement of the thyroid gland by causing goiter and hypothyroidism

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp aliv seed / Garden cress seed soaked
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 8 to 10 cashews
  • 10 to 12 raisins
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup dates paste
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder

Instructions

  • Firstly, take a small bowl and add aliv/halim seeds with little water
  • Soak this for 15 to 30 mins until garden cress seed becomes swollen
  • Meanwhile, heat a heavy bottom pan on low flame
  • Further add ghee. when ghee started to melt, add cashews and raisins
  • Saute them for a min and take out to a plate
  • Keep the flame low and add a cup of milk, alternatively almond milk or cashew milk can be added
  • Bring this to boil for 2 mins
  • Then add soaked aliv seed and give a good mix
  • Boil for 2 more mins and again add dates paste
  • Give a good mix and bring to boil for another 2 mins
  • Finally add cardamom powder and roasted cashews and raisins
  • Give a final mix and turn off heat
  • Now healthy and nutritious Aliv Kheer is ready to serve!
  • Enjoy this kheer hot or chilled!!
