Moong Dal Chilla is a simple, healthy & nutritious recipe. These chillas are prepared using split yellow moong dal or split mung beans, along with some spices and herbs. Most importantly, In Ayurveda, Moong dal is considered as “Tridoshic”. That means moong dal or mung beans balances all the three doshas like vata, pitta and kapha.

This moong dal chilla is one of the ideal recipe for breakfast, or as a snack for evening and even good for lunch box too. So simple to make and tastes amazing. It doesn’t need any side, but these chillas are tastes great with green chutney or any spicy chutney, or even with tomato ketchup.

There are different varieties of chillas like, besan chilla or chickpea chilla, with finely chopped onion & tomatoes, oats chilla, rava chilla etc. Among those moong dal chilla is one such variation. Chillas are different from South Indian dosas. You can use moong dal for making both chilla, as well as dosa. But both in a different way. For making chilla, we use split yellow moong dal. If we use the whole mung beans or green gram, then it is called ‘pesarattu’ – one of the famous & nutritious breakfast recipe of South India.

Moreover for making chilla, the batter consistency is the most important thing. The batter should not be too thick nor too thin. It should be in medium consistency. It is also possible to make stuffed chillas, by adding grated paneer or grated carrots, along with finely chopped onions and tomatoes as a topping on the chilla. This will be more healthy and nutritious too. Also this is a protein rich recipe, as moong dals are rich in proteins, fibers and low in fat. This is a perfect recipe which comes under 300 calories.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow moong dal split
  • 2 to 3 cup water for soaking
  • 1 tbsp Cumin
  • 1 tbsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 inch Ginger
  • 1 tbsp Curry Leaves finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Coriander leaves finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp Hing (Asafoetida)
  • Salt as per taste
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1/4 tsp red chilli powder

Instructions

  • Firstly take a large mixing bowl and add 1 cup of split yellow moong dal. Then add 2 to 3 cups of water and soak for 2 to 3 hours.
  • Next drain off the water.Take a blender and add the moong dal.
  • Also add cumin, fennel seeds and ginger.
  • Blend this mixture to a smooth paste. Add little water if needed while blending.
  • Transfer the blended moong dal mixture to a large bowl.
  • Now add finely chopped curry leaves and coriander leaves.
  • Similarly add hing, turmeric powder, salt and red chilli powder.
  • Mix everything well. The batter should be in medium consistency. Not too thin and not too thick.
  • Next heat tawa on moderate flame and pour a ladleful of prepared chilla batter over tawa.
  • Spread gently and drizzle a little oil over the chilla.
  • Cover the lid and cook on medium flame for 2 mins.
  • Also flip on the other side and cook well. Take out this to a plate.
  • Now the healthy & nutritious moong dal chilla is ready to serve.
  • Enjoy this chilla with green chutney or any spicy chutney or with tomato ketchup.
