Khichdi/ Kitchari is a staple of an Ayurvedic diet and is known to be the perfect detox food. It is one of the most nutritious & comfort meal, which is so easy to prepare. Most importantly, it is a great source of macro-nutrients. Totally a wholesome gluten free meal.

Moong  Dal Khichdi is a simple one pot recipe. Basically kitchari is a traditional Indian dish made with rice, moong dal and cooked with Indian spices like turmeric powder, hing, ginger & pepper. It has a porridge like texture and flavorful recipe with the goodness of yellow moong dal and ghee.

Further kitchari is the easiest solid food. This comfort meal is traditionally prescribed when recovering from illness or when dealing with a digestive issue. Because it is easy to digest. Ayurveda offers kitchari, a recipe that is consider to be a vital food for restoring balance to body & mind. Rice & moong dal together create a balanced food that is a good protein combination and is tridoshic. Moreover khichdi is a sattvic food, which is suitable for all age groups.

This one pot cleansing meal moong dal khichdi is so easy to prepare & tastes delicious. If you wish, you could add vegetables to make it more nutritious. So when you have stomach upset, then it is best to have khichdi.  Generally it does not create any abdominal discomfort, like gas or bloating because of healing properties of hing (asafoetida).

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • 1 red chilli
  • 1 tbsp ginger minced
  • ½ tsp hing (asafoetida)
  • 2 tbsp onion finely chopped
  • ½ cup tomato finely chopped
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ cup yellow moong dal soaked for 15 mins
  • 1 cup rice soaked for 15 mins
  • 3 cup water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp coriander leaves finely chopped

Instructions

  • Firstly, soak split yellow moong dal & rice for 15 mins.
  • Next heat a cooker pot on moderate flame & add ghee.
  • Once ghee starts to melt, add cumin, red chilli, minced ginger & hing.
  • Saute all these for a minute.
  • Further add finely chopped onion and again saute well.
  • Similarly add finely chopped tomatoes and saute it until tomatoes are mushy.
  • Then add turmeric powder, soaked moong dal & rice.
  • Give a good mix and add 3 cups of water.
  • Also add salt and mix well.
  • Cover the lid and pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles.
  • When the steam settles down completely, carefully open the lid.
  • Add little water if the consistency of the khichdi is too thick.
  • Finally garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.
  • Now the healthy & comfort meal moong dal khichdi is ready to serve!
