Ashwagandha is one of the ayurvedic ancient medicinal herb used for more than 2500 years. First of all, it is an apoptogenic herb that’s popular in Ayurvedic medicine. “Ashwagandha” in Sanskrit means “smell of the horse,” which refers to both its unique smell and ability to increase strength.

Its botanical name is Withania somnifera. The ashwagandha plant is a small shrub with yellow flowers that’s native to India and North Africa. Extracts or powder from the plant’s root or leaves are used to treat a variety of conditions.  In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is considered a “Rasayana”. That means it’s an herb that helps maintain youth, both mentally and physically. Also, ashwagandha used to treat many health conditions like Arthritis, heart health, Alzheimer’s treatment, cancer and Thyroid.

At least we can consume ashwagandha powder in this milk form , rather than taking in raw form, and it is difficult to take in raw form because of the unpleasant smell of ashwagandha. Most importantly, the best time to drink this medicated milk is at bed time.

Ashwagandha is POSSIBLY SAFE when taken by mouth short-term. The long-term safety of ashwagandha is unknown. Large doses of ashwagandha may cause stomach upset, diarrhea, and vomiting.

  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Do not use ashwagandha if you are pregnant. It is unsafe during pregnancy.

Because it has traditionally been used to strengthen the immune system after illness. Ashwagandha milk or ashwagandha ksheera is a simple, healthy recipe made from ashwagandha powder and milk. Here is the recipe.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup boiled and cooled milk
  • 1/2 tsp ashwagandha powder
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp cardamom (elaichi) powder

Instructions

  • In a sauce pan add water.
  • Now add ashwagandha powder.
  • Mix well and bring to a boil for 5 mins until it reduces to half.
  • Turn off the heat and strain the mixture to a bowl.
  • Add boiled milk and let it cool for 2 to 3 mins.
  • Similarly add honey for natural sweetness.
  • Further add cardamom (elaichi) powder.
  • Finally give a good mix and pour this to a glass jar.
  • Now the super healthy healing ashwagandha ksheera is ready to serve and enjoy!
