Horse gram is a miracle, lesser known pulse and is a great vegetarian source of protein on the planet. It is used as a staple food for horse and cattle and so the name “Horse Gram”.

Basically, in ancient times, this amazing lentil occasionally used for human consumption and also in Ayurvedic cuisine.  According to Ayurveda Horse gram is a super food with medicinal properties & widely used in treating many ailments like kidney stones, cough, cold, asthma, piles, PCOD/PCOS in women.

Usually this wonderful legume is consumed as a whole seed, as sprouts or as a whole meal in India. Most importantly, horse gram is not popular as black gram, green gram etc. But it is one of the most nutritious legume for a healthy diet. 

Another name for Horse gram

Macrotyloma uniflorum is the scientific name of horse gram. In sanskrit you can call Horse gram as “Kulattha” or ” Kulatthika”.  ‘Huruli’ in Kannada, ‘Kullu’ in Tamil, ‘Ulavalu’ in Telagu & ‘kulthi’ in Hindi.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp horse gram
  • ½ cup freshly grated coconut
  • 2 red chilli
  • ½ tsp tamarind
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp jaggery
  • 2 tbsp onion finely chopped

For tempering:

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil organic
  • ½ tsp mustard
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp hing(asafoetida)
  • 4 to 5 curry leaves

Instructions

  • Firstly, heat a pan on moderate flame and add horse gram
  • Dry roast horse gram for a minute and turn off heat
  • Allow to cool this roasted horse gram and then transfer to a blender jar
  • Next add freshly grated coconut, red chilli as per spice
  • Also add tamarind, salt and jaggery
  • Additionally, add little water and make a fine paste
  • Transfer the blended chutney to a bowl and keep aside
  • Meanwhile, prepare tempering for chutney. For that heat a tempering pan on medium flame and add coconut oil
  • once the oil gets heated up, add mustard, cumin, hing and curry leaves
  • Saute well until splutters and turn off heat
  • Further add finely chopped onion over the chutney and prepared tempering
  • Give a good mix
  • Now nutritious super food Horse Gram Chutney is ready to serve!
  • Enjoy this healthy and lip smacking chutney with dosa, idli, roti & even with hot plain rice with a tsp of coconut oil or ghee
